Bamboo bends. Paper catches the air. A breeze moves through the room.
Sensen is a traditional Japanese hand fan that finds beauty in the simplest of materials: bamboo, washi paper, and the natural tannins of persimmon fruit.
Its broad, graceful silhouette is both sculptural and wonderfully practical. Slender bamboo ribs spread beneath a sheet of washi paper, creating a fan that feels light in the hand yet substantial in its presence.
The paper is treated with kakishibu, a traditional persimmon tannin finish that lends the surface its warm, earthy color. The result has a quiet richness, reminiscent of aged paper, sun-dried leaves, and wood warmed by the afternoon light.
There is no printed pattern to distract from the form. Just the natural character of the materials, the gentle geometry of bamboo, and the beauty of an object made for a single, thoughtful purpose.
With its generous width, Sensen moves a satisfying current of air with each sweep of the wrist. Keep it nearby during the warmer months, or display it against a wall where its distinctive shape can be appreciated throughout the year.
Made by Kurikawa Shoten, a Japanese fan maker established in 1889 in Kumamoto, Japan, Sensen carries a long tradition of craftsmanship into the present.
A beautiful way to welcome a little breeze.
