The green tea for when you’re in the mood for something warm and toasty.
Hojicha starts with green tea leaves, but slow roasting completely changes their character. The leaves deepen to a warm brown, the usual grassy notes soften, and flavors reminiscent of toasted barley, nuts, and vanilla begin to come through.
Brew a cup and you’ll notice the difference right away. The color is a deep amber, the aroma is wonderfully toasty, and the flavor is smooth and gently sweet with very little bitterness.
The roasting process also naturally reduces much of the tea’s caffeine, making hojicha an easy choice later in the day. I’d reach for it after lunch, on a cool afternoon, or in the evening when you want something warm without another strong cup of tea.
There’s something especially comforting about it. It still has the simplicity of Japanese green tea, just in a warmer, softer direction.
