Komaru Japanese Persimmon-Dyed Hand Fan — Kurikawa Shoten

Regular price $48.00 Sale

A warm afternoon. The quiet rustle of paper. A gentle breeze made by hand.

Komaru is a traditional Japanese hand fan made from bamboo, washi paper, and natural persimmon tannin. Small and softly rounded, its simple silhouette reveals the beauty of materials that need very little embellishment.

Slender bamboo supports the washi paper, which is finished with kakishibu, a traditional coating made from persimmons. The treatment gives the paper its earthy, warm-toned character, allowing the natural materials to become the decoration.

There is something wonderfully satisfying about the way a hand fan works. A small movement of the wrist sends a soft current of air across the skin. No electricity, no noise. Just bamboo, paper, and a moment of relief from the heat.

Komaru's compact, rounded form makes it especially lovely to keep close by—on a bedside table, beside your favorite reading chair, or within reach on a summer afternoon.

When not in use, its graceful shape and natural finish make it a beautiful object to leave on display.

An everyday pleasure, rooted in Japanese craft.
