Genta Yamamoto (of Genta Kiln) remains a fixture in the Fukuoka pottery world. He is quite unique in that he creates his own clay and glazes by harvesting natural materials surrounding his home in Hoshinomura. Hoshinoyaki, the style of pottery he produces, was developed in Hoshinomura. It fell out of favor in the 1960's, and for a period of time there were no artists continuing the style. Yamamoto-san saw an opportunity to resurrect the style so he went door to door collecting vintage pieces of Hoshinoyaki pottery from townspeople. He studied the style, pieced it all together, wrote a book about it, and began training younger potters to make it—single handedly saving the style. He is the defacto master now.
