This is green tea with a little more to discover.
Asatsuyu, a name that means “morning dew” in Japanese, is an organic gyokuro tea grown in Kirishima, Japan. Before the leaves are harvested, the tea plants are shaded from the sun, a traditional method that develops a deeper, sweeter flavor and gives the finished tea its beautiful dark green color.
The first sip may surprise you. Rather than the light, grassy character you might expect from green tea, Asatsuyu is rich and almost silky, with a gentle sweetness and savory notes that can remind you of nori and miso.
It’s the kind of tea that makes you want to slow down and pay attention. I’d save a little time for this one—brew a small pot, pour it into your favorite cup, and see how the flavor changes as you continue drinking.
Asatsuyu is also produced in limited quantities. Because it requires more care to grow, once a harvest sells through, it may not return until the following spring.
A beautiful choice for someone who already loves Japanese green tea, or anyone curious to discover just how different a cup of green tea can be.
