A striking Japanese chawan in the Kuro-Oribe tradition, defined by its deep black glaze, expressive decoration, and deliberately irregular form.
The bowl is enveloped in a rich, nearly black glaze that shifts subtly with the light, revealing the horizontal movement of the maker’s hand beneath the surface. Areas of exposed warm clay interrupt the darkness, becoming a canvas for freely drawn spirals, sweeping lines, and crosshatched motifs in iron-rich pigment.
Its asymmetrical profile and gently undulating rim give the bowl a distinctly tactile presence. Rather than seeking perfect uniformity, the form celebrates movement, spontaneity, and the marks left by the making process.
The interior is almost entirely black, creating a dramatic setting for the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha. This contrast is one of the qualities I particularly love about darker Oribe bowls—the tea itself becomes part of the composition.
Rooted in the expressive tradition of Japanese tea ceramics, this is a chawan meant to be held, used, and appreciated from every angle. No single view tells the entire story of the piece.
