Cherry blossom viewing became popular during the Edo Period. The tree, known as somei-yoshino cherry, originated in Somei village near Edo and is now commonly found in groves throughout Japan. These viewings served as a social event for the people of Edo to gather, present themselves, and partake in performances. The occasion was marked by the wearing of elaborate kimonos and celebrations involving singing and dancing to welcome the arrival of Spring.
